Paul Graham wrote a provocative essay on the origin of wokeness. It is worth reading even if you disagree with it. The performative nature of moral righteousness seems to rub some people the wrong way and there are good reasons for it. However, many people would call the anti-woke backlash as yet another attack by people in power unsettled by the emergence of an alternate, powerful voice.
