As you wind down this year, remind yourself about slow productivity. Obsess over quality, do fewer things, and enjoy the process. That’s the essence.
A person who embodies this well is our community member Manu Pillai. He is a historian who churns out a deeply researched history book every few years. Writing is his full time job, and he is able to make a living on his terms following the slow productivity mantra.
The more you observe people who have built their category of one, the more you will realize that it takes a while. Take a look at Cobra Beer founder Karan Bilimoria’s masterclass. Many career transitions and many pivots later, an iconic brand was born but the less discussed aspect remains the joy of building. People who embark upon challenging adventures give themselves a long time horizon and they find/create joy through the process.
Being successful and miserable is not an aspirational state. Aim for a process that gives you room to breathe, experiment, and figure out thorny challenges along the way. A lot of it is energy management. People often don’t lack talent or skills. They run out of energy. Don’t let that happen in 2025.
